Marseille fans were left in tears as they bid farewell to their hero Jean-Michel Payet, who announced his retirement from football on Monday.
The Ivory Coast international had been with the club since 2013 and has become one of their most beloved players over the years.
In a statement released by the club, Payet said that he had made the decision to retire after playing for Marseille for seven seasons.
"I am very proud to have played for this club for so long," he said. "I want to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my career."
Payet scored 85 goals and provided 67 assists during his time at Marseille, making him one of the most prolific strikers in French football history.
He also won three Ligue 1 titles with the club and was named player of the year in 2017-18.
The club is planning a special farewell ceremony to honor Payet, which will take place on Sunday night before the match against Paris Saint-Germain.
The ceremony will be attended by Payet's family and friends, as well as former teammates and supporters of the club.
"It's going to be a momentous occasion for all of us," said Marseille president Jean-Pierre Rivère. "We're going to celebrate a legend who has given everything for this club."
Payet's departure comes at a difficult time for Marseille, who are currently sitting in mid-table in the league table and are fighting relegation.
But the club's supporters know that Payet will always be remembered as one of their greatest ever players. And they are sure that his legacy will live on forever.
